Intelligent, crafted, friendly fast video production for business and education. An extensive career in education radio, multimedia and video with several year as a consultant at University College London since 2011.

  • Helping UCL academics to use video to present their research and to teach effectively,currently the Erasmus ABCtoVLE rollout to 12 European Universities.
  • Sharing production management experience & academic research demonstrated by hands-on skills with his video camera.
  • Researching the use of video in teaching with publications and video reports & ‘How to’ resources at Middlesex University School of Education.
  • Applying methods in local social and community projects.


Mike Howarth is a committed educationalist. On his first Kodak sponsored expedition to Peru in 1971 to collect teaching resources for schools in the UK he escaped four road crashes in one day on the mountain roads of the Vilcabamba Valley. He went on to make radio broadcasts for 20 years at BBC School Radio.

He used a PhD supported by BBC Education to understand the process of turning broadcasts into the new digital media, then to teach and lecture in new technologies for ten years, setting up a new course at West Herts College, and later at Middlesex University providing academic advice for managers taking higher degrees and creating eLearning resources at the Institute for Work Based Learning.

His research focus is applying video journalist techniques learnt in recent training by experienced BBC Newsnight cameraman John Morris, tailoring the principles and aplications to fast track economic use of video in and for the classroom. The reassessment of the learning process and hands-on thinking informed by neuroscience and metaphor, particularly spatial and embodied metaphors used by camera crews applied to academic staffand students creating videos. In Teaching and Learning Online Routledge 2nd Edition 2013. Chapter: Metaphor and neuroscience: a message to online learning, outlines his thinking on ‘media- savvy’ teaching: study and practice of the development for teachers and learners in a digital age, and revisiting the value of video technologies as teaching tools. Further writing is planned exploring the work of McGilchrist in the current move to ‘cleave’ – bring together research and practice in various fields including arts & science. A practitioner of the ‘Power of Making’, he is trustee of the Courtyard Arts & Community Centre, Hertford.

Backpack video journalist methods are not really new – “I was drilling himself to work quickly with Kodak Instamatic & Phillips tape recorder with eyes closed” – a technique learnt from his mentor Denis Kemp – enabled him to interview and photograph at the same time from day one. His view is still the same. It is not new technology that is important, the focus is the end-user, which requires a heart, a passion, and a deep understanding of processes involved.


Mike is married to Diana Freeman, MBE. Director of the Advisory Unit: Computers in Education, the supplier of AEGIS GIS mapping software to schools.
