EXERCISE 3: ENGRAVED TEXT

Creating Engraved Text

How to create that "engraved" text look in Photoshop 6.

1)

First, create a new document:

2)

You will see another box open up asking you to specify the properties of the new image you would like to create...
In this case use a width of 300 pixels and a height of 75 pixels.

3)

Create a new layer.

When your on the new layer, I used the rectangular marquee tool to split the colour of the image...blue on the left and white on the right hand site, using the paint bucket. Stay away from darkish colours, as the final effect doesn't look so great.

4)

Now, select your text tool and select a font (IMPACT was used for this ). The larger the font the better the final result will look. It doesn't matter what colour you choose for the font. A grey colour was used in this example.

Note: The text will be on its own layer. You should have a total of 3 layers now, including the text layer.

5)

The next step is the most important.

With the text layer selected, apply the inner shadow filter to the text.

Click on layer,

then layer style, theninner shadow. The default settings should work fine but try variations. The grey has been darkened.

6)

Now, still with the text layer highlighted, go to the layer options and change the layer style to "overlay". This can be done on the layer menu itself, or from the layer menu on top, under layer style and blending options.

Your final result will look something like this only better:
