PDF Forms are an important new development. Often designers use them to quickly create PDF versions of Word documents. and they look good but do not work properly, because the designer does not know how to explore the potential of Acrobat JavaScript functionality.
I am exploring the potential of PDF Forms for academic use. I have a number of projects in this area and I am available for freelance PDF design work.

The awards of using PDF technology for education is breathtaking. However, it is evident that people who are sold the idea of making files in PDF is easy, are in for a shock. Even turning a Word document into PDF can cause issues if the original document is not stripped of code. Changes to PDF layout cannot be made without the use of other design software. The book explaining what to do to make PDF files really work in an educational setting is 900 pages long!
The prize is worth the effort, principally allowing learners, particularly busy, mature students in the workplace to concentrate on the academic aspects through structuring guidance in coursework and athrough streamlining the administrative minefield together saving hours of staff and student time and which creates so much anxiety.
A rapid ePublishing model that keeps resources upto date and designed for people learning under pressure can replace the narrative method of the traditional Open University documents.
However, it is clear that one issue arising in the PDF production is the workflow development of the form. There is a real need to gain agreement of teams and to test and try the form out to a schedule.
Another issue is the administration of the PDF documents. Forms make life easier but they still have to be managed and the admin sequence should be worked out in advance.
Anyone can make a PDF file but will it be a small file that can be emailed? Extra methods are needed to make the documents function properly.
PDF workflow and especially forms need training, and training should be built into form development.
Assume that the PDF route will be easy is a quickt route to chaos. Time spent working on the planning process with an experienced hand will be time well spent.
