Metaphors in work-based learning: A Research Proposal

Abstract

Aim: To investigate the use of metaphor by participants in the field of work-based learning.
Objective: To review a sample of 200hrs of video pre-digitized on hard discs personally recorded by the researcher: online broadcasts, student and staff interviews, lectures, e-learning resources, PR information and conferences, recorded at the Institute for Work Based Learning during 2010 and 2011.

Methodology:

Choice of appropriate methodologies in the video analysis. Core task: statistical sample methods for 200hrs of material, analysis of video footage for use of metaphorical language: identifying categories, counting instances of events, grouping of themes, ranking, summarise findings, selecting examples, creating video and report.icktime version quality.

Audience:

Disseminated to individuals and organisations in the field of work-based learning and interested bodies.

Achievement to date:

A paper outlining research informing the proposal delivered at Work Based Learning Futures V Conference, University of Derby, 15-16th Sept. 2011
Poster at 'Research in Distance Education 2011', Centre for Distance Education, University of London Oct 26th 2011.

Potential impact on the subject area:

The research will enable investigation of recent evidence from neuroscience which suggests metaphor may be much more important that previously considered an that metaphor is the way we learn, not merely a figure of speech. The research will move forward discourse on learning theory in work-based learning by creating a new paradigm that not just highlights the use of metaphor but relates theory to practice in learning. The source data can potentially demonstrate the frequency and range of metaphor use by practitioners to communicate in their field from the real world evidence and to illuminate the terms they use to understand their work and give meaning to good practice. The end-user, the student or apprentice in the work place can gain through a better understand the way learning is integrated with practical activity effectiveness and pleasure in their occupation.

Plans for publication / dissemination Work so far:

A paper outlining research informing the proposal is available at http://www.mhmvr.co.uk/site/derby.html Video presentation testing the subject and method of creating resources at Work Based Learning Futures V Conference, University of Derby, available at http://www.mhmvr.co.uk/site/metaphor/cdeposter.html

Publication and dissemination plans include: paper report of study, textual analysis results, and video examples in HDV quality for conference use and internet quality for web use, conference presentations, workshops and university staff trainings events (internal and external), student teaching materials. The academy will be asked to consider publishing the output.

The researcher also considers that integral to project is 'researcher as hands-on thinker', and with a proven record as a professional education producer and can envision and create resources himself in the form of Web 2 digital material. Publication will also be in the form of, for example, a website with practical teaching materials, publications, video and interactive examples arising from the project.
